Small Ways to Keep Your Carpet Clean Throughout the Year

A home’s carpeting reflects the style and versatility of the homeowner. From its level of comfortability to the safety of those occupying the space, carpet is a smart choice for many individuals & families. Typically, carpets are installed throughout the high traffic areas of home, such as living rooms, bedrooms, and entry ways. Unfortunately, this leaves those areas susceptible to dirt, grime, and staining throughout the seasons. To keep your investment for the long-term, it may begin to feel like an annual home project. Below we have listed a few small ways to keep your carpet clean:

  • Vacuum Regularly: This may seem like a basic tip. However, regular vacuuming once every week clears the underlining dirt & debris from the previous week. If you have pets and/or kids, you may want to consider vacuuming those high-traffic areas more intently.
  • Use Rugs and Runners: With the addition of area rugs or runners, you can protect those high-traffic areas from increased amounts of dirt and staining. It is recommended to place rugs near the areas where kids or pets tend to play.
  • Remove Shoes at your Entry Way: Tracking dirt and contaminants from outside can happen, especially when you wear shoes inside your home. At the entry way of your home, it's recommended to leave your shoes on a mat and checking the bottom of your feet or socks before entering.

While these may be easy to implement into your daily routine, it is important for the long-term health of your carpet, in turn keeping you and your family safe from those tracked contaminants.

How to Handle Carpet Stains

You may be taking all the necessary precautions to keep your carpet looking and feeling fresh throughout the year, but unfortunately, it is inevitable that stains will happen. If your home is open to pets & children, you are aware of the various spills and hair that can further stain the carpet. To handle those small stains on your carpet, we have listed a few practices to try below:

  • Act on Stains Quickly: Treating stains at once is the right course of action. Unnoticed stains can potentially leave a lasting color mark on your carpet.
  • Avoid Carpet Powders, Use Baking Soda: Store-bought powders leave a residue on your carpet after vacuuming. The use of baking soda provides the area of your carpet a fresh scent while absorbing odors and dirt on the spot.
  • Do Not Rub Stains: When removing dirt or spills from a carpet, never rub the stains. Scrubbing hard will only force the stain deeper into the carpeting. It is recommended to continually blot with a white or neutrally colored towel.
  • Have Professionals Clean your Carpets: Lastly, professional carpet cleaning should be used at least twice a year to maintain your carpeting.
